Description
Instructor: Susie Jackson, AITI. Susie is a Spanish to English freelance translator and copy editor and an Associate of the ITI (Institute of Translation and Interpreting, UK). Alongside her academic translation and editing work, Susie mentors freelancers on pricing, helping them to figure out how much they should be charging and how to raise their rates with clients so that they can earn a decent living doing what they love. She works with mentees one on one, and through her group programs. Before starting her business, Susie worked for several years as a university administrator and has always had a head for numbers. She loves to use her knowledge and skills to support freelancers to achieve their goals and create businesses that align with their own values while supporting them financially.
Susie has presented workshops about pricing and finances at online summits and has been interviewed on a number of podcasts, including Smart Habits for Translators, the Buddhified Business Podcast, and Marketing Tips for Translators. Description: Let’s be honest, you probably didn’t become a translator for the money. But if you want to run a sustainable business, you’re going to have to get to grips with your finances sooner or later. And this includes your pricing. Making sure you’re getting paid enough for the amount of time you spend on a project will ultimately make or break your business.
In this course, Susie will introduce you to her tried-and-tested method to help you set your rates based on your personal circumstances. By the end of the four weeks, you’ll know exactly how much you need to be charging as a minimum, as well as which clients aren’t paying you enough. And with that knowledge at your fingertips, Susie will also support you to raise your rates with them.
The final goal is to create a profitable business that works for you: one that allows you to earn a good living while still finding time for the other things that matter to you.
The four weeks will feature different tasks that build on each other as the course progresses.
Week 1 – Creating a budget for your translation business
Week 2 – Making arrangements for your long-term financial health
Week 3 – Establishing your rates, understanding the minimum you need to be charging to earn enough to live comfortably, and setting an aspirational rate to achieve your future goals
Week 4 – Assessing your current situation and acting on it, asking clients for testimonials and increasing your rates
Past participants say:
-“This course is a life-changer in more than a million ways. I couldn’t recommend it more!”-Molly Yurick
-“In this course, Susie asked us to dream and then gave us the tools to achieve our dreams. The activities (which were tangible, not just theoretical) left me feeling empowered to take control of my business and my earnings without letting emotion interfere. It was a powerful exercise for me and one I recommend to both new freelancers and those who have been at this for years. If you’ve ever asked what the going rates are for translation, take this course and you’ll quickly learn that you’re asking the wrong question—and you’ll get an answer as unique as your own business.”-Emily Safrin
-“For months, I was hiding from the numbers because I didn’t want to see them (what you can’t see doesn’t exist!). I’m so grateful that I decided to enroll in Susie’s course. Not only did I learn a lot, she also managed to get me to face my fears.”-Iria Carballo
