Instructor: Corinne McKay, CT. A full-time freelancer since 2002, Corinne is the author of How to Succeed as a Freelance Translator (a how-to guide with over 12,000 copies in print); she is the founder of Training for Translators, and has been writing books and teaching courses for other freelancers since 2005. Corinne is ATA-certified for French to English translation, court-certified in Colorado for French interpreting, and holds a Master of Conference Interpreting from Glendon College/York University.

Course description: This four-week, self-paced course (participants have access to the course materials for six months) is for beginning and/or aspiring translators and interpreters who want to set up and run a fulfilling and financially stable freelance business, particularly in the age of AI. Registration includes:

• self-paced video and text modules released on Monday of each week (using the Thinkific online learning platform)
• the opportunity to submit questions for a weekly question and answer video (recorded and sent to participants)

You’ll complete the course with an understanding of how the language professions and the language industry work, and what you need to do to be a successful freelancer.

-Week one: An overview of the language professions and the language industry (translation and interpreting), types of clients, income potential, and how to decide if you’re ready to enter the market; choosing specializations

-Week two: Creating a translation or interpreting-targeted resume and cover letter/e-mail, and/or one-page profile; deciding how much to charge and getting paid

-Week three: Developing and implementing a marketing plan for agencies and direct clients; freelancing in the age of AI

-Week four: Creating an online presence: website, LinkedIn, association profiles, etc.; thinking about certifications and the future of your business
