Description: In this four-week online course, you will learn the practical knowledge, tips, and strategies necessary to start or continue offering official translation services as an integral and profitable part of your freelance business. Spanish to English examples will be used, but the course is open to translators in any language combination.
We will cover:
- the types of official documents you are likely to be called on to translate
- formatting tips, general concepts and procedures to be aware of
- pricing your services, and finding/managing clients so that you can earn the highest hourly rate possible and ensure a stable source of income
- preparing certificates of accuracy and handling clients’ certification requirements
Week 1: Introduction to official document translation. In this week’s live session (recording provided), we will go over foundational concepts related to official document translation, including the types of documents you will most frequently work with, who can offer these services, and the different entities involved, as well as a practical framework and handy resources for making terminology decisions.
Week 2: Introduction to formatting. In this week’s live session (recording provided), we will cover the technical side of official document translation. You will learn how to use Word and Adobe Pro to create and modify formats for official documents and deliver professional-looking and secure translations.
Week 3: Marketing your services and preparing certification statements. In this week’s live session (recording provided), we will discuss where to find these types of clients, pricing your services, and how to prepare a certification statement.
Week 4: Managing clients and collaboration. In this week’s live session (recording provided), we will talk about how to manage clients, common pitfalls to avoid, and how to create a system to optimize your hourly rate for these services. We will also discuss the many possibilities for collaboration this type of work offers for new and experienced translators alike.
