Upcoming session of "Getting started as a freelance translator"

Thoughts on Translation has been on hiatus for Spring Break for the past week, but I’ve been enjoying reading your comments on my previous posts! The next session of my online course Getting Started as a Freelance Translator will kick off on Monday, April 11. It’s a six week, self-paced course for people with little or no experience in the freelance translation world. The course tuition ($350 with a $50 discount for ATA members) includes six PDF lessons and individualized feedback from me on all of your homework assignments. By the end of the course, you’ll have a translation-targeted resumé and cover letter, a list of potential clients, a marketing plan and a rates sheet for your translation business. You can read feedback from graduates of the course here. Have a great day!

    Hi Corinne,

I have just discovered your web site and have been reading it with great interest.

You are absolutely right about getting started. I’ve been procrastinating for a few months now, just deliberating on where to start.

I have just missed your six-week course, but would like to know when you are offering another course. I would like to take it.

I have been doing volunteer translating for about 3 years for an immigrant services association. A year ago they promoted me to proof-reader and so I do only proof- reading now. Sometimes this involves a full translation because I do get to proof-read a lot of work produced by novice translators.

I do French and Spanish to English translations — birth certificates, death certificates, university transcripts and degrees, letters of reference, magazine articles, etc.

I absolutely love translating. I like it so much more than what I have been doing — teaching French and Spanish.

I, like you, studied French from childhood, studied in Paris, and have a Master’s degree in French from a Canadian university. I also lived in Mexico, worked there, and have the equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish from a Mexican university. I spend three months every winter in Mexico (professional development?).

Please let me know when you are going to offer your course again. If it is a distance learning course, could I start at any time?

    Sincerely,

    Pat Hall
