A sneak preview

I’ve been threatening to compile a book of my blog entries for some time, and it looks like it’s finally going to happen! I just ordered the final proof copy of Thoughts on Translation, and here’s the cover, designed by the incomparable Sue Campbell. Sue is a fellow Coloradoan and I found her through our local freelancers’ group, Boulder Media Women. I have a hard time working on the design aspects of any project, because I’m not a very visual person (hence the reason I live in a house with white walls and frequently wear jeans with black t-shirts!). Sue “got” my project right from the start and gave me a buffet of beautiful and creative designs to choose from. Here’s the one I went with…can you tell that blue is my favorite color? And Sue even reworked my 2 Rat Books logo–sentimental to me because my husband drew it–into a “real” logo that I can splash on all kinds of things. The print edition of the book should be available in about a month, and the Kindle/iPad/Nook/etc. versions will follow shortly after that.

Good cover design, Corinne! One thing I have noticed since such things became important to me is how some designs scale well from thumbnail to poster-size and others do not. This one looks like it’ll do well in the whole range. Never noticed the rat logo before, but I love it.

Thanks Kevin! My husband is thrilled that you like the rats! It’s a reference to a Michael Moore movie (that’s why it’s “rat” instead of “rats”); I’ll blog about that sometime too!

Thanks Sue! It was a tough decision between Rube Goldberg and the blue thought bubble, but I just love blue so much! However I have a feeling that you and I will be working again together, so maybe Rube will reappear!

I like the design but I believe that a cloud with bubbles would be more appropiate in this case since we are talkinng about “thoughts”. Here’s an example: http://vector.us/files/images/1/4/146503/jon_cloud_outline_thinking_cartoon_signs_symbols_philli_clouds_thought_free_bubbles_bubble_blank_think_comic_of_a_thoughts.jpg

Are there any groups on Linkedin designed to focus translation topics that you are aware of and that are good and active?

Carla, I’m only a member of the LinkedIn groups for the translators associations I belong to, but I’m sure that there are some good and active translators’ groups out there. Anyone else have a suggestion?
