Description

Instructor: Training for Translators’ founder and lead instructor Corinne McKay has been a full-time freelancer since 2002. She is certified by the American Translators Association for French to English translation, by the Colorado Judicial Branch for French court interpreting, and holds a Master of Conference Interpreting from Glendon College. In addition to her own translation work, she is the author of How to Succeed as a Freelance Translator and Getting Started as a Freelance Interpreter. She served on the Board of the American Translators Association for seven years, including as ATA President from 2017-2019.
Description: This course is for freelancers who want specific guidance and tools to break into the direct client market, including instruction (how to do this), accountability (getting it done), and individual feedback (I will review one piece of your marketing material).
Registration ($245 for Training for Translators Plus members, $275 general registration) includes:
  • five live sessions (recordings provided); see below for schedule and topics
  • two co-working sessions (no instruction during these sessions, we’ll just meet online and work for an hour)
  • an accountability log for you to track your progress
  • individual feedback on one piece of your marketing material (I’d suggest a pitch e-mail or your LinkedIn profile, but it’s up to you)
  • ongoing access to my monthly alumni question and answer sessions

Schedule and topics:

-Tuesday, October 27, 11:30 AM-12:30 PM New York time (check this in your time zone; some countries do the clock change before this and some do not). Kickoff session: an overview of direct client marketing, how to determine who needs you, and how to choose marketing methods you’ll actually stick with. Recording provided.

-Tuesday, November 3, 12 noon-1 PM New York time: A closer look at e-mail marketing to direct clients, including scripts you can customize for your own purposes. Recording provided.

-Friday, November 6, 10 AM-11 AM New York time: Online co-working session. No recording, we’ll just meet online and work together for an hour.

-Tuesday, November 10, 12 noon-1 PM New York time: A closer look at LinkedIn, how to improve your profile and how to network on LinkedIn.

-Thursday, November 12, 12 noon-1 PM New York time: Online co-working session. No recording, we’ll just meet online and work together for an hour.

-Monday, November 16, 12 noon-1 PM New York time: Client-side events and other marketing strategies (presenting to professional associations, co-marketing with related professionals, marketing to “intermediaries” that aren’t translation or interpreting agencies, when and how to do a discovery call, how to follow up with clients who seem interested but never commit)

We’ll then take a break for you to work on your materials and strategies, and meet for a live question and answer session (recording provided), 12 noon to 1 PM New York time on Tuesday, December 1.
