Summer-fall online courses: open for registration

My summer-fall online courses are now open for registration on my website. All of the recent sessions of these classes have filled up with a waiting list; so it’s not too early to sign up, even if the class you’re interested in is a few months in the future.

I currently offer four online courses; each runs for four weeks and includes four sets of video lessons, individual feedback on four assignments, four sets of weekly readings and podcasts, eight live question and answer sessions and a private Google Group for class participants. Registration is $355, with a $15 discount for ATA members. You can choose from:

  • Beyond the Basics of Freelancing: for experienced freelancers who want to earn more money and enjoy their work more, starts August 22
  • Breaking Into the Book Translation Market: for aspiring translators of fiction and non-fiction books, starts September 12
  • Marketing to Direct Clients: a marketing-only class for translators who want to work with direct clients, starts September 26
  • Getting Started as a Freelance Translator: for new and aspiring freelancers, starts November 14

Following are some comments from participants in recent sessions of these classes. Thanks and I hope to see some of you there!

“Exactly what I was looking for. Corinne will answer pretty much any question one might ask. Her feedback is thorough and very perceptive. It’s not just “good job” but why something is good and why something is not, and what you can do to improve it. I also loved the flexibility of the class, as I ended up having two very busy weeks during that time. Everything is recorded and, even if it is advisable to do everything according to schedule, you can go at your own pace. I now have a notebook filled with useful notes, objectives pinned on my wall and a strategy to attract direct clients I am now confident in.”

“One always learns from Corinne’s experience. She’s an outstanding instructor because she empowers her students so that they can approach their freelance business more effectively while feeling more confident. Corinne’s courses are a must for translators/language professionals/freelancers. I’d take one of her courses every year.”

“I found the course to be extremely helpful, both through the wealth of information conveyed and Corinne’s positivity. At the end of the course, I now have the confidence and knowledge to market to direct clients.”

“I don’t know why I waited so long to take this course. Corinne’s experience and feedback have proven to be an invaluable tool for my freelance career and I would recommend it to anyone, not only to those who are just starting, but also those of you who have been in this for a little while, but want to become more focused and effective in the way you run your business.”

“I learned so much about the translation industry and general business practices and the personal feedback from Corinne was absolutely priceless. I would highly recommend this course and I will take another class from Corinne in the future.”

“I am very pleased to have taken Corinne’s “Getting Started as a Freelance Translator” course. It was a real eye-opener. The course was very well organized, pretty much every aspect of the business was dealt with adequately, Corinne’s homework corrections were very helpful and the conference calls were also quite informative. I know I can do this now! Thank you so much for everything.”

Upcoming webinar and class

Greetings everyone and happy 2016! Here’s to a happy, healthy, and (why not…) lucrative year for all of us in the translation and interpreting industries. I have a couple of exciting guest posts to kick off the year, but first, a couple of announcements:

On January 14, I’m presenting a webinar on Translating for the International Development Sector for eCPD webinars. Registration is 25 UK pounds, and includes the live webinar and a full recording. This is an overview presentation, mainly for translators who are interested in translating for the international development sector. We’ll look at a history of development players such as the United Nations and its programs and agencies, USAID and other public development agencies, and private charitable foundations, and the types of translations these entities need. We’ll also talk about some of the key concepts and trends in the international development sector today, and what languages and specializations are the best fit for translators who want to explore this sector.

The next session of my online course Getting Started as a Freelance Translator starts on January 11 and runs for four weeks. I’ve revamped this course into a new format; you’ll get four weeks of self-paced material, including three video slide shows per week and a 15-30 minute task every weekday. We’ll also do a weekly live question and answer session, and you can participate (or not!) in the course’s online discussion group. Registration is $320 ($305 for ATA members) and you can apply at the link above. A past participant in the course commented that “I took Corinne’s course and I attribute a large portion of my success to her. I could not think of a better way to give your freelancing career a big boost than taking her course. Very inspirational, very valuable information, great program all-round!” One group (10 people) is already full, but I’ve opened a second group and it has about five spots left.

Winter/Spring online courses: new format and offerings

I’m excited to announce that, subsequent to the survey that I did about a month ago, I’ve reshaped my online course offerings and the winter/spring classes are now open for registration. I’ll be offering four classes in more of a coaching group format, and instead of one major homework assignment every week, I’ll be splitting the work up into 20 “tasks of the day” (one every weekday for the four-week session) and we’ll discuss the tasks in an online discussion group (Don’t worry: not Facebook! Survey says 25% of translators will not do an online course that requires Facebook!).

Over the past two years or so, my online course sessions have continued to fill up, but fewer people have completed the weekly homework assignments, although they still reported that they got a lot out of the class. So, I’m reworking the course material into smaller chunks, and including more ways for participants to interact with each other. The coaching groups will still be limited to 10 people, still include a weekly live question and answer conference call, and still include lots of personal attention!

Here’s what’s in store for the winter/spring session. Early bird rates ($290; $15 discount for ATA members) apply through December 15, and each class runs for four weeks:

  • Getting Started as a Freelance Translator (beginning/new translators only): January 11
  • Beyond the Basics of Freelancing (experienced/established translators only): February 22
  • Marketing to Translation Agencies (all levels): March 14
  • Marketing to Direct Clients (all levels, but must have some experience in the industry): April 11

To read more about any of the courses or fill out the application form, hop on over to my website.
